Winners of Penang's first ever Nasi Kandar cook-off announced

Hong Kong / Penang, 27 Aug, 2013 – The Star Cruises Nasi Kandar Cooking Competition 2013 onboard SuperStar Libra from 21-23 August 2013 witnessed the rise of new culinary experts. Organizer Star Cruises, the leading cruise line in Asia-Pacific, is pleased to announce the successful conclusion of this three-day key event of Genting Hong Kong’s 20^th anniversary.

Eastin Hotel’s Junior Sous Chef Mr. Mohd Fauzi Alias, 34, and housewife Ms. Maizatul Shila Bt. Mat Baki, 38, each triumphed over 15 other contestants in their respective professional and amateur categories in the three-day event, the first of its kind held in Penang. Each walked away with a RM5000 cash prize and 2 sets of 4D3N cruise with Oceanview stateroom with window cabin for two onboard SuperStar Gemini.

Ms. Maizatul of Taiping, Perak, burst into tears when her name was announced. “I’m very shocked.  This win is beyond my expectation. This is a dream comes true. I started off cooking only for my six children, and I’ve always cooked curry as my mother-in-law loves it so much. I’m grateful for my husband who has encouraged me to enter the competition.”

This is also Mr. Mohd Fauzi’s first Nasi Kandar cooking competition. He calls himself very lucky. “The other 15 contestants from the Professional Category are far more experienced than me, but I’ve worked hard in perfecting this dish by exchanging notes with my peers in order to produce flavours which suit different customers. I think this helped to capture the taste buds of the judges.”

Silver Medallion Awards went to Ms. Tan Lay Li and Mr. Jayaraj A/L Shanmugam in the Amateur and Professional Categories, respectively. Each received RM2,000 cash and a set of 4D3N cruise with Oceanview stateroom with window cabin for two onboard SuperStar Gemini.

Housewife Ms Tan, 58, is passionate about cooking, especially nyonya food. She was surprised to find herself finishing second. She hopes Star Cruises can organize more cooking competitions and promote this local cuisine to the world.

Mr. Jayaraj A/L Shanmugam, Owner cum Chef of Bountiful Kitchen Restaurant in Penang, was on cloud nine when he heard his name. “I’m really happy to know the judges love my curry fish head. I was a bit worried they wouldn’t like the fusion twist I gave to the authentic recipe,” Chef Raj said.

Student from Penang’s Golden Chef Culinary Academy Mr. Lim Li Wei and Assistant Chef of The Cruises Steak House Mr. Hasbullah Abd Hamid won the Bronze Medallion Awards of the Amateur and Professional Categories, respectively. Each received a RM1,000 cash prize and a set of 3D2N cruise with Oceanview stateroom with window cabin for two onboard SuperStar Gemini.

It was a memorable day for Lim, 26, to have won second runner up in his first cooking competition. “This competition surely has honed my culinary skills. What I’ve learned here is something I can’t learn from school.”

Hasbullah, 32, said his winning of second runner up will boost his confidence in Indian-Muslim cooking, and this experience will encourage him to participate in more competitions in the years to come.

Other than the Medallion Awards, seven Guests’ Choice Awards were given out. The judges for the awards were randomly selected passengers from not only Malaysia, but also around the world such as Australia, Iran, Pakistan and India. The winners are:

The Star Cruises Nasi Kandar Cooking Competition 2013 is endorsed by Penang State Tourism and supported by Chefs Association of Malaysia (Penang Chapter) and Malaysian Association of Hotels (Penang Chapter).

During the award presentation, Star Cruises surprised each contestant with a complimentary 2D1N high sea cruise package onboard SuperStar Libra for two (Oceanview stateroom with window cabin) to thank them for their participation. The unexpected announcement further escalated their excitement.

The competition had drawn overwhelming responses since its launch in July 2013. A total of 32 participants (16 from each category) were chosen to compete in the preliminary rounds staged onboard SuperStar Libra on 21 August (Amateur Category) and 22 August (Professional Category) in front of the star-studded panel of judges and cruisers.  The final was staged onboard SuperStar Libra on 23 August.

The winners of The Star Cruises Nasi Kandar Cooking Competition 2013 will be invited to show off their talent onboard SuperStar Aquarius when the ship is on its seasonal deployment at Kota Kinabalu, Sabah starting 6 November 2013, as well as onboard SuperStar Virgo, which currently homeports in Singapore, when it calls in Penang.

Penang attractions recently added a new icon called Water UBAH at IJM Promenade Penang. It has became the public attractions and discussion despite many do not agree on the project which is likely copycat of the Rubber Duck. It is discussed and widely spread in the social media, the successful rate of the project still under review as it will only display until 31st August 2013.

Many has dropped by at the IJM Promenade during weekend just to take photo with Water UBAH with the background view of Penang Bridge. People loved to see fresh and new things in Penang. Some of the Penang streets suddenly become visitors focus and visiting spots. The Ernest Zacharevic is a Lithuanian street artist currently living in George Town, located in the province of Penang, Malaysia has changed the almost dying Penang street back to alive.


Wall painting news become headline of the Penang's major newspaper. It was a good start of Penang Heritage George Town with such a wonderful street art in placed in conjunction of George Town Festival. A city with Heritage, Historical, Arts, Unique Culture combine perfectly with the modern living, high rise buildings, streets food, lifestyle shopping malls and lovely beaches.


Visitors are able to see paintings portrait Penang's most simple, inmaterialistic, pure and natural living lifestyle. The bicycle with 2 children riding on it are among the most popular wall painting. It has attracted most attention of the visitors when come to Penang. Penang Gurney Drive

Penang Gurney Drive is one of the most crowded area in Penang for visitors. Gurney Drive have the long stretch pedestrian lane and beautiful seafront view. You may takes for half an hour walk from one end to another end around 3km. Gurney Drive also well-known because of the hawker food or street food offer there. Thai Buddhist Temple in Penang

1. Wat Chaiya Mangalaram

 

Wat Chaiya Mangalaram was built as a Buddhist temple on the 30th May 1845. According to the record available, the idea of granting the land as a permanent endowment for religious benefit of Thailand was first mooted by the governor, Mr. W.I. Butterworth. A formal grant was made by the East India Company on behalf of Her Majesty Queen Victoria to representative of the community. Since then, the land has remained in trust to this present day.

The main attraction of Wat Chaiya Mangalaram is the reclining Buddha statue (Luang Phor Chiya Mangol), which was built during 25th century of the Buddhist Era (1957). With length of 108 ft and 32 ft in height makes it the largest in Malaysia and third largest in the world. Skilled sculptor were engaged from Thailand to design the decorative and artistic value of the monument, including drawings of the life story Lord Buddha. There are about 30,000 Buddha image inside the hall. Also an iconography of ancient Buddha and Bodhisatta images of various type from Cambodia, Ceylon, Vietnam, China, Japan, Loas and Thailand are being exhibited in the hall.

To further enhance the unique beauty of the temple, the committee decided to erect a 40ft tall pagoda adjacent to the reclining Buddha building.

Years later, more buildings came up with the donation of kindhearted devotees. Today, Wat Chaiya Mangalarm is one of the most famous tourist spots in Penang.

 

Wat Buppharam is a Thai Buddhist temple located at Jalan Perak in Penang. The name Wat Buppharam means "flower temple", and is one of the common names for temples in Thailand. Among the locals in Penang, the Wat Buppharam here is often called Temple of the Lifting Buddha, on account of the century-old Buddha image in the temple. It was founded in 1942 by Phothan Srikheaw, a Thai Buddhist monk, who acted as the first abbot of the wat. Wat Buppharam is busiest during the Loy Krathong Festival. It is where the procession starts, with devotees bearing the colorful "krathong" or floral offerings, making their way from the temple at Jalan Perak, through Jalan Burma, Lorong Burma, passing Wat Chaiyamangkalaram and Dhammikarama, to Persiaran Gurney, where they are placed in the sea.

Wat Buppharam is one of the two temples often involved in the staging of Thai festivals such as Loy Krathong and Songkhran.

Penang Fort Cornwallis

Fort Cornwallis - named after the Governor-General in Bengal, Charles Cornwallis – is  one of the most interesting historical landmarks in George Town, located close to the Esplanade, next to the Victoria Memorial Clock.

Fort Cornwallis is situated at the spot where Captain Francis Light was supposed to have landed in 1786. Originally a wooden structure, the fort was rebuilt between 1808 and 1810 with convict labour. It was named after Charles Marquis Cornwallis, a distinguished Governor General of India, and designed as a defense against the French, Kedah, and pirates (at this time Anglo-French rivalry was at a peak).

Sir Francis Light would have never thought that the fort he built more than two centuries ago are still intake and filled with the everlasting rich history of Penang.

Penang Snake Temple

The Snake Temple (simplified Chinese: 蛇庙; pinyin: Shé Miào) is situated in Sungai Kluang, Bayan Lepas, Penang, Malaysia and is perhaps the only temple of its kind in the world.

The temple is dedicated to a deity called Cheng Swee Chor Soo. Cheng Swee Chor Soo is known by the Hokkien as Chor Soo Kong and by the Cantonese as Chou-See Yeah. Both names basically mean the same: "The much honoured Chor-Soo". The temple is one of the oldest in the world and attract many devotees world wide, especially from Taiwan and Singapore.

When you walk into the temple, you can probably see some snakes (green in color) laying on the tree's pot or the bamboo trees. The visitors are advised not to touch the snakes for safety precaution.
