The 200km cycling track which was planned by Penang State Government being transformed into initial stage by converting Taman Bandar Ampang Jaja into Cycling Park. The official launching will take place on 20th Jan 2013 (Monday) 7 a.m. The organizer LP MTB Fans Club and MPSP (Majlis Perbandaran Seberang Prai) will flag off the official launching. Estimated 300 cyclists will take part in this grand opening.
Cycling events became more popular especially more and more cycling events organized by group such as G Club http://www.gclub.com.my/ and car free day campaign (every Sunday at Beach Street) by State Government. The state government campaign 'Cleaner and Greener Penang' have encouraged more Penangites ride on bicycles to the road. This is a good sign and efforts for reducing carbon emission and fight global warming.
Another factor that drives Penang to achieve Cleaner and Greener city is the Street Art attractions around George Town. Many visitors just rented a bicycle and ride to the places where they can stop by and take photograph with the Street Art along the roads.
Another great effort from Penang Green Council toward Go Green program for Penang! It was a significant achievements in term of number of green citizen registered. One of the highlight of Green Fiesta in AutoCity in conjunction with World Environment Day Celebration. Huge 'Green Citizen' were turned up to witness the launching and opening of Green Fiesta. From Jan 1 this year, plastic bags will be banned in the Malaysian state of Penang.
The ban will apply to all supermarkets, hypermarts, department stores, fast food chain stores and nasi kandar outlets, as well as convenience stores including petrol kiosks and chain stores, The Star newspaper reported.
The move is an extension of the current "No Plastic Bag Day" observed by shopping malls and hypermarts in the state three days a week. Shoppers who did not bring their own reusable bags are charged 20 sen ($0.08) for each plastic bag.
The ban, said Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng in his Budget speech, will reduce the state's carbon footprint. Chief Minister said that it is all right for the older generation to be angry with the state government for not providing them with plastic bags so long as the future generation get to enjoy a better environment.
