The originator of USM Jazz Band was Teh Hock Lye. It was by chance that he had stumbled upon a assortment of brass instruments which was left by USM’s previous now-defunct brass band. In 1997, he decided to revive the brass band and Jeep was invited to be the conductor. Jeep suggested a Jazz Band instead of a brass band and that was how USM Jazz Band was born.
